Rivers and streams

The head of a pool, the seam beside a run, under a tree, the tail where it shallows. Upstream if you’re stealthy; across-and-down with a spinner if the colour’s in. Stay low.

Stillwaters

Dam wall, drop-off, incoming stream, weed lanes, the windward shore. Stocked rainbows often patrol the middle; wild browns hug structure. Check if lure fishing is allowed — a lot of trout lakes are fly only.

Tickets

Club water, estate lake, EA licence plus a day ticket. Poaching a little brook because it looks pretty is still theft. If in doubt, don’t.
