Equipment

Light enough that a small trout still pulls. Heavy bass gear turns him into a leaf on the line.

Rod

6–7 ft spinning rod, 3–15 g or 5–20 g. A soft tip so small trebles stay in. If the water is fly only, that’s a fly rod — not this page.

Reel

1000–2500 size, smooth drag, filled with light line. Rinse if you’ve been in a weir with a hint of salt.

The rest

Small net with a knotless mesh, forceps, polarised glasses, a tape, barbless or crushed barbs where the ticket asks. Wading staff on slippery rock. Keep spray-on floatant off your spinner box.
